Nepali Journalist assaulted in New York

Lokmani Rai, Nepali journalist based in New York, America has been assaulted by Umesh Rai for writing news on November 10 2018.  Umesh  Rai is brother in law of Paruhang Rai who is the chief assistant of Sherdhan Rai, the chief minister of Province 1 of Nepal.

Journalist Rai was taken outside from the venue of Tihar event and assaulted by Umesh Rai for writing news about Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai traveling to the US from Thailand and attending of a welcome program organized by the controversial organization and persons.

For this reason, journalist Rai was assaulted and abused verbally. After the incident, the journalist was taken to Elmhurst hospital for emergency and was discharged after six hours.


Freedom Forum condemns the incident of attack and assault against the foreign-based Nepali journalist for writing critical news. The incident is a sheer violation of press freedom. The incident shows that Nepali journalists are even unsafe in foreign land. FF urges the concerned authority to take action against the culprit and book under the law.
