Freedom Forum condemns the arrest of journalist and anti-corruption activist Om Hamal from Sisuwa of Kaski district on 23 August. Journalist Hamal is the editor of janasanchar.com, an online news portal, operated from Pokhara of Kaski. Kaski district lies in Gandaki Province.
According to information sent by FF's representative for Gandaki Province Rajan Upadhyay, journalist Hamal was arrested by the security officials for being allegedly associated with Biplab-led Maoist group.
Om Hamal is a recognized journalist working in the area of anti-corruption and investigative journalism in Kaski district.
The arrest of the journalist merely for his political faith is a gross violation of press freedom. FF demands his immediate release. FF believes that no citizens should be arrested for his/ her political ideology and journalists should not be troubled under this reason. One after another, such arrest of journalists has not only endangered FoE but also terrorized the journalists.
