Freedom Forum condemns the attack on journalist Anil Burma by Mahagadhimai Municipality Mayor Upendra Yadav while reporting about municipality expenses in Bara district on October 3, 2019. Bara lies in Province 2.
Journalist Burma is associated with Cinnepal.com. and Radio Tarai Birgunj 107 MHz.
As per FF's representative for Province 2, Rajan Singh, journalist Burma had demanded information about the number of the vehicle used by municipality along with its expenses. When journalist Burma asked Mayor Yadav about the expenses, he was beaten up by Mayor Yadav.
Journalists attacked merely for reporting the news is against the notion of press freedom. Right to Information is citizen's fundamental right ensured by the constitution. It is the citizen's right to get access to information on public importance issues. Hence, FF urges the concerned authority to take action and ensure a safe environment for reporting.
