Shahi registers complaint against journalist Siwakoti

Roshani Shahi, who has charged former Speaker of House of Representatives Krishna Bahadur Mahara for rape attempt, has turned against the journalist who exposed the incident on media and filed a cybercrime lawsuit against Ajay Babu Siwakoti at Metropolitan Police Crime Division on Friday, November 1, 2019.

Chief Editor of hamrakura.com Siwakoti had published a video interview of Shahi hiding her identity for the first time on media. Now, Shahi has changed her statement to the police and claims that earlier she had reported to the police under influence. Shahi blames journalist Siwakoti for exposing the alleged incident.

Also, she appeared on various online media to refute the allegation against Mahara few days after she registered complaints to the police accusing the politician attempting rape at her room.

According to her lawyer Raman Shrestha, she has accused Siwakoti of recording her interview without prior permission. Shahi claims that when the interview was taken, she was semi-conscious after taking medicines for depression. Shrestha informed that she sent the complaint via post office after the police declined to take the complaints.

Freedom Forum is surprised about the registration of a complaint against  hamrakura.com's Chief Editor Siwakoti. FF urges Nepal Police not to take further action under the Electronic Transaction Act in regard to Shahi's complaint. If action is taken, it is the suppression of investigative journalism and sheer violation of press freedom.
