Pachrauta Municipality in Bara district sought proof of a news report published in a local daily newspaper, Shubha Arambha, on March 12. Bara district lies in Madhesh Province, Nepal.
The municipality issued a letter on its official letterhead, asking the media to submit evidence supporting the news published in the daily on February 15 and 16. The news was about alleged involvement of the municipality mayor and a health professional in covering up corruption and fowarding a cybercrime case to suppress opposition's voice.
Freedom Forum is concerned about this incident. The municipality has no right to ask media to disclose its sources, but it can follow a legal recourse with the Press Council Nepal in case it has dissatisfaction over the news content.
