Reporter with Sunrisetvnews.com, Sudeep Thapa, was attacked in Kailali on February 28. Kailali lies in Sudurpaschim Province of Nepal.
Freedom Forum spoke with Shravan Deuba, President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Kailali Chapter about the incident. President Deuba informed FF that reporter Thapa was attacked while returning home after covering election activities. As he was walking, two individuals on a motorbike followed him. Upon recognizing Thapa, they beat him on face and fled the scene.
Chairperson of the media organization, Uttam Thapa informed FF that reporter Thapa sustained injuries to his eyes and face in the incident. Following the attack, Thapa is currently receiving treatment at Sarathi Hospital in Kailali.
The incident has been reported at District Police office, Kailali with one of the attackers identified. Police is searching for them, said Chairperson Thapa quoting the police.
Freedom Forum strongly condemns the attack on the reporter. FF urges the security authorities to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of journalists during the election period.
