Editor-in-Chief of Diyopost.com, Sudip Bishwakarma received a threat over news reporting on April 9. The news portal operates from Kathmandu, the federal capital of Nepal.
Chief Editor Bishwakarma told Freedom Forum that a news report on the investigation initiated by the Department of Money Laundering Investigation into the assets of Nepali Communist Party leader and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal was published on April 8, along with screenshots of supporting documents.
Following the publication, Ganga Dahal, daughter of leader Dahal, called Bishwakarma and questioned why he had published the news and what/who the source of information was. She also threatened him with legal action, warning him to prepare for a prolonged legal process.
Bishwakarma further shared with FF that he was prepared for any legal action but would not reveal his sources, and that the report was published with supporting evidence from credible sources.
Freedom Forum condemns the threats issued to the journalist over his reporting. It is a serious violation of press freedom. FF strongly urges the concerned to approach Press Council Nepal for any dissatisfaction over published news, instead of threatening journalists or pressuring them to reveal their sources.
