Journalist Suraj Gurung at Saranginews.com.np was assaulted over his news reporting on September 5 in Lamjung, Gandaki Province, Nepal.
Gurung told Freedom Forum that he had published a news report on the day of the incident regarding a notice issued by the District Administration Office, Lamjung, asking local organizations not to organize any public programmes at a time when many people have lost their lives and many remained missing following the devastating Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi flood.
According to Gurung, the news stated that a local youth club had postponed their scheduled football match in Bhorletar, Lamjung, following the local authority’s directive.
Following the publication of the news, three to four members of the youth club asked Gurung about the news and hit him on the head. Gurung said that injured area is swollen and he is receiving follow-up treatment.
Further, his mobile phone and camera were also damaged during the incident. According to Gurung, the mobile phone’s display and gimbal was damaged and camera’s lens sensor is no longer functioning.
Gurung forther informed that police refused to register his complaint at the District Police Office on September 7. On September 11, police summoned both parties for discussion, he said.
Freedom Forum condemns the assault on journalist Suraj Gurung. Assaulting a media person over news reporting is a serious violation of press freedom. FF urges the security authorities to address the case fairly thereby, ensuring atmosphere for journalists.
