Reporter Shyam Kumar Yadav from Apan Dainik (daily newspapers published from Siraha) received death threat over his reporting on alleged smuggling activities in Siraha, Madhesh Province on October 29.
Reporter Yadav told Freedom Forum that following a tip-off about smuggling activities along the border, he visited the area. He took photos and videos of ongoing smuggling at the site and published on the Facebook page of Apan Dainik on October 26.
Following its publication, a person named Ajay Yadav arrived at the reporter's residence early in the morning on October 29 and threatened him and his family members. Ajay Yadav questioned the reporter why he published the video and threatened to shoot or kidnap him by mobilizing goons.
Reporter Yadav immediately contacted police for assistance. Police immediately reached his residence, arrested Ajay Yadav and took him to the District Police Office.
On October 30, reporter Yadav filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police regarding the incident.
Freedom Forum condemns the threat issued to reporter. FF urgest the security authority to fairly investigate on the case and ensure safety of journalist.
