Radio Nepal Journalist Beaten up

Nawalparasi-Two journalists, Deepak Bhattarai of ABC Television and KB Rana of Radio Nepal, were injured by an Armed Police Force (APF) team in Arunkhola of Nawalparasi, a western region district on Tuesday, July 29. 

The police team baton charged journalists who reached on the site to cover news of scuffle between police and people following a police vehicle (Ba. 1 Jha. 7394) hit a motorbike (Lu.2 Pa. 178) in Dumkibas killing three persons of a family on the spot, according to the informed provided by Purswottam Subedi, Nawalparasi-based correspondent of National News Agency (RSS).

Both journalists are undergoing treatment in Bharatpur-based Chitwan Medical Science College. KB Rana is serious and has received four stitches, he added.

Journalist Rana’s digital camera worth Rs. 10, 000 was looted during the scuffle.

Principal of Dumkibas-based Shantideep Boarding School Surya Bahadur Thapa, 35, his daughter Irisa Thapa, 7, and nephew Tupin Thapa, 13, died when a jeep belonging to Dumkibas Area Police Office hit their motorbike at around 8 PM, evening.

Freedom Forum is concerned over the police attack on journalists while reporting and asks the government to provide injured journalists with necessary compensation. The Forum also urged the police administration to show respect to journalist’s right to freedom of expression and not to suppress journalist on duty.
