Newspaper editor manhandled for news coverage

A group of youths vandalized the office of "Gatishil daily", a newspaper published from Nuwakot district adjacent to the capital Kathmandu, and attacked its editor Badri Pyakurel on September 6, Monday.

Following a news report on a scuffle where a local of Battar Village Development Committee (VDC) was hurt, the miscreant group resorted to vandalize newspaper office.

"The group came to my office and started vandalizing the office saying why did you publish the news of brawl," editor Pyakurel told us, adding "later they bounced on me all of sudden."

Freedom Forum is concerned over the incident as it violates the existing legal provisions of Nepal in connection with freedom of press and of expression. The Code of Conduct for journalists and other laws clearly state that there is a legal remedy for the readers to seek justice if any wrongdoings are made by newspaper. Attacking the newspaper office instead of going for legal remedy by a group of youth is condemnable. Freedom Forum urges the government to investigate into the incident and bring the guilty to book at the earliest.
