Freedom Forum is outraged over the attack on journalist Bal Krishna Sharma, a local correspondent for Sagarmatha Television in Rukum— a mid-western district of Nepal on December 19, 2010.
Journalist Sharma was attacked by a group of gamblers while taking photographs of them. He had taken a picture when he saw the persons gambling at the public place. Gambling at the public place is deemed illegal according to the law of Nepal. The miscreants also seized journalist Sharma’s camera for a while and later returned asking him to delete the images from the camera. They threatened him to face dire consequences if the news about the gambling was broadcast or printed in any media. Freedom Forum deeply concerns the incident and asks the local authority to prosecute the guilty. Further, it is very unfortunate to learn that journo was threatened and forced to remove pictures for covering the news of wrong doings. Freedom Forum calls upon the government to provide enough security to journalist Sharma until the case gets settled.
