Freedom Forum-Nepal is gravely concerned over the increasing incidents of press freedom violation these days in Nepal. A day after a group of gamblers attacked on journalist Bal Krishna Sharma, a local correspondent for Sagarmatha Television in Rukum, another scribe Mr. Partha Mandal and his family members have been assaulted by the persons involved in illegal trade at Bhadrapur in Jhapa — a far-eastern district of Nepal on December 20, 2010. Similarly, Mr. Krishna Gyawali, another journalist was manhandled in Bhaktapur district nearby the capital city, Kathmandu, on December 17. Mandal is the reporter for Purbanchal Daily brought out from Birtamod, Jhapa.
Journalist Mandal had reportedly covered the news on the goods illegally imported by not paying off customs duty. The group involved in the illegal trade of importing goods rounded up Mandal and his family members after returning home. Journalist Mandal, his mother Santona Mandal and father Gopal Mandal sustained injuries in attack.
Freedom Forum deeply concerns the incident and asks those involved in violation of press freedom to respect journalist's rights. The Forum strongly demands the authority concerned to bring the guilty party to book and come up with concrete measures to stop the events of press freedom violation.
