Editor Intimidated

Freedom Forum's attention has been drawn towards an incident of press freedom violation occurred at Tehrathum, a hilly district in the eastern most part of Nepal on July 10, 2011.

A person calling himself a share holder of a financial institution, Commerce and Trust, called Chief Editor and publisher of a local Nawabihani daily Krishna Gautam over the phone and asked why he did not write good news about the institution.

Talking to Freedom Forum's media monitoring desk, Chief Editor Mr Gautam said the person denying identifying himself warned him to write only good news about the Commerce and Trust, otherwise it would not be good to him.  He added that he had written news comparing the status of various financial institutions in the districts.

Freedom Forum is concerned over the intimidation which is in a way a violation of press freedom. So, the concerned authority is urged to help create the atmosphere conducive for journalists to carry out their works.
