Police Person Threats Journalist to Life

Freedom Forum has been concerned over another incident of press freedom violation occurred at Rautahat, a district in the southern plain of the country on August 12, 2011.

Head constable at the Central Regional Police Office, Hetauda, Gambhira Sahani threatened journalist Bikash Agrawal of taking life over the news he published in a newspaper.

Talking to Freedom Forum's media monitoring desk, Bikash Agrawal, Chief Editor of a local Bypass daily published from Birgunj, said, "Head constable at the Regional Office Hetauda, Gambhira Sahani threatened him saying his life was short as he would be shot soon." The threat came over the phone number 057-521499 of the control room of the regional police office.

He further said the threat came regarding the news he published on August 10, 2011 - Mobile police file complaints against their fellow workers in the Home Ministry and Police Headquarters without disclosing names.

Freedom Forum condemns the incident that journalists have been the butt of threats and attack not only from the non-state sides but from the state- that too, from the security body. When the security body itself involves in such acts of terrorizing people what is the meaning of their duty? Freedom Forum urges the government to direct its employees to honour press freedom by giving ample security to the journalists and promoting right to information. Moreover, the police person wreaking menace must to be brought to book as per the law.
