Editor Dotel Injured in Police Attack

Freedom Forum is concerned over a police attack on Shiva Dotel, Editor of the Nepali Express daily published from Nepalgunj, a city in the southern plain of the Midwest Nepal on September 14, 2012.

Editor Dotel was attacked by a group of police led by Assistant Sub Inspector of Police Batti Kumar Pokhrel without an apparent reason while Mr Dotel was going to office.

Police, despite being a government body responsible for providing security to the people and society itself turned hostile to the people.

According to Shukra Rishi Chaulagain, News Chief at local Radio Bageshwori, Editor Dotel was attacked indiscriminately. As a result, he had to have seven stitches on his head.
Mr Chaulagain added the District Police Office have initiated action against ASI Pokhrel and his group.

Such incidents are responsible for creating terror among journalists which thereby impose self-censorship. It disturbs the work environment for the journalists. Therefore, Freedom Forum wants administration book the culprit police personnel and his group.
