Freedom Forum has been concerned over an incident of press freedom violation that occurred in the capital city on January 2, 2013.
A group of people directed by Nirmal Gurung seized a bundle of the Budhabar weekly containing 1800 copies from the Bhugolpark in the capital city reasoning it published the news about him.
Talking to Freedom Forum's Media Monitoring Desk, Editor of the Budhabar weekly, Bishnu Rijal said, "We published the news about harassment of a rights activist and campaigner by Gurung who is not only a bank defaulter but also convicted on various cases. Because of this, his men seized our paper."
Editor Rijal argued that in the name of giving publicity to the right activist, Nirmal Gurung harassed the activist unnecessary.
Freedom Forum condemns the incident as it is sheer violation of press freedom and citizen's right to information.
Moreover, Nirmal Gurung who is himself running a media acted against another media once his foibles are made public.
FF, therefore, urges Gurung to compensate the Weekly and respect media freedom and people's right to information.
