Youth Wings of Political Party Seize Weekly

Bal Krishna Basnet, regional chairman of Tarun Dal, a youth wing of the Nepali Congress party and Yudhir Poudel, former district secretary of Nepal Student Union affiliated to the same party, seized the copies of the Okhreni weekly in Sindhupalchowk on July 2, 2013.

Talking to Freedom Forum, Yuvraj Puri, correspondent to the Annapurna daily from Sindhupalchowk, a district adjoining to the capital city, said the local leaders of the youth wings of the Nepali Congress- Mr Basnet and Poudel seized 30 copies of the weekly thereby banning circulation.

Mr Puri further said they seized the weekly, reasoning a publication of an article penned by Rishiram Poudel.

In this connection, police have held the two seizing the weekly and investigating the case.

Freedom Forum condemns the incident, as it has violated citizen's right to information and freedom of expression.

Despite being the cadres of the political party known to being abiding by democratic principles, they resorted to the undemocratic practice as banning distribution of the newspaper. It does not suit such party, Freedom Forum concludes.
