Media at receiving end of agitation

With the ongoing agitation launched by various political parties in the southern plains of the country protesting the proposed delineation of the federal provinces, the media houses and the journalists are facing hard times in Nepal.

On7 September, security persons attacked Bikram Rauniyar, reporter for the Mountain TV, while he was reporting on agitation in the neihbouring Dhanusha district.

According to Suresh Ghimire, reporter with the Itahari FM in Sunsari, the protestors attacked Nawin Karna of Makalu TV, Khilanath Dhakal of Setopati news portal and Jitendra Thakur of the Gorkhapatra daily in Biratnagar, a city in the eastern southern plains of the country on September 9.

The agitators also burnt a motorcycle used by reporter Karna.

Talking over phone, a senior journalist in Mahottarai district, Dashrath Bhandari, said, "It is very difficult for us for field reporting due to strikes, curfew and agitations. There is no safe atmosphere at all. Journalists are afraid of attacks from both sides."

Freedom Forum condemns the violations against media and journalists. The strike and agitation have suppressed journalists' right to free reporting and informing people. So the protestors are strongly urged to make the demonstration peaceful and respect others' rights while making demands. Similarly, the police persons must not treat the journalists as to the agitators.
