Attack on press freedom, journalists

Freedom Forum has been alarmed over various incidents violating freedom of expression and press freedom in different parts of the country.

Reporter Gole injured in assault

In the night of December 15, an unknown gang assaulted Raj Kumar Gole, reporter for the Nayapatrika daily, from Kavrepalanchowk.

Talking to Freedom Forum, reporter Gole said, "It was dark I was returning home after reporting at about 8:00pm. All of a sudden, an unknown gang asked me whether I was Mr Gole, and assaulted me."

He had to have eight stitches on left hand in the hospital after the assault.

He further said he was attacked because of his investigative reporting.

Newspaper circulation blocked

In Saptari, a district in the southern plains of the country, circulation of the national newspapers as Kantpur, Kathmandu Post, Nagarik and Annapurna dailies was obstructed by the agitating Madhesi Morcha, on December 16. A huge number of the copies of newspaper were seized from local stationery at Rajibiraj city, the district headquarters.

Maoist party attack TV Cable Office with explosive

Similarly, on December 15, a group of people affiliated to the Maoist party led by Netra Bikram Chand hurled a bomb and damaged the office of DISH Home TV cable at Bhaisepati, the southern outskirt of the capital city, Kathmandu.

The vandalism was committed by the party reasoning the TV cable aired Indian channel.

With this, the office incurred the loss of Rs 2.5 million and the disruption of service to half million customers.

Freedom Forum condemns all these incidents which are gross violations of freedom of expression, press freedom, and people's right to information. The security in Kavre district is strongly urged to immediately nab the assailants on reporter Gole and bring them to book and help check impunity. Similarly, it is quite egregious assault on people's right to information with the explosion in the TV cable. Freedom of expression is a frontier-less issue. Also, the agitating Madhesi Front must teach its cadres to respect press freedom by ensuring smooth supply of the newspapers.
