Reporter with the Gorakshya daily published from Dang, a district in the mid-western region of the country, was attacked by a person over the news related to his election in a local drinking water consumers' group.
On March 1, one of the contenders of the chair of the consumer group at Bhalubhang in the district, Rishiram Poudel, attacked reporter Santosh Gupta, reasoning the reporter did mistake on the votes he garnered in the election.
Sharing information to the Freedom Forum, Editor of the Gorakshya daily, Bipul Pokhrel, said reporter Gupta sustained minor injury on his eyes, as Poudel attacked him with fist. Editor Pokhrel admitted that there was mistake on the reporting of votes.
Journalists are key persons to the dissemination of information and communications. Free and fair atmosphere for journalists is essential to promote press freedom. Therefore, the concerned authority should take action against those issuing threat to journalists.
