Attack, threats on journalists

Reporter with the Gorakshya daily published from Dang, a district in the mid-western region of the country, was attacked by a person over the news related to his election in a local drinking water consumers' group.

On March 1, one of the contenders of the chair of the consumer group at Bhalubhang in the district, Rishiram Poudel, attacked reporter Santosh Gupta, reasoning the reporter did mistake on the votes he garnered in the election.

Sharing information to the Freedom Forum, Editor of the Gorakshya daily, Bipul Pokhrel, said reporter Gupta sustained minor injury on his eyes, as Poudel attacked him with fist. Editor Pokhrel admitted that there was mistake on the reporting of votes.

Threat of physical attack
In a separate incident related to the same election, Keshav Bohara, editor of a local weekly, Raptidwar, was threatened by another candidate to remove his office from the rented house, reasoning his newspaper published blurred election symbol.

According to editor of Gorakshya daily, editor Bohara was forced to remove the office as the house owner (election contender) gave ten days ultimatum to quit the place merely because the election symbol published blurred in the newspaper.

Threat of Attack
Moreover, on March 27, reporter for the Purnank weekly, Janak Rishi Rai, was threatened of attack by a person nicknamed God Angel over a news story relating to his citizenship certificate.
"God Angel threatened me over phone- why I wrote the story about his citizenship certificate, and he would send goons to attack me," said journalist Rai while talking to Freedom Forum.

He added that God Angel's citizenship certificate was printed with some additional information which was not in others.

Freedom Forum condemns these incidents which have violated press freedom. Attacking reporters merely because of the publication of news and other threats over the news show how hostile the situation is to the media and journalists.

Journalists are key persons to the dissemination of information and communications. Free and fair atmosphere for journalists is essential to promote press freedom. Therefore, the concerned authority should take action against those issuing threat to journalists.
