Threat to free expression

Freedom Forum expresses serious concern over the arrest of a political cadre inside a media house by Nepal Police in Dhangadi on 13 May 2018. Dhangadi lies in the Province 7 of Nepal.

A cadre associated to Netra Bikram Chand 'Biplav'-led Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), Dil Bahadur Saud, was arrested from the studio of Dhangadi based- Radio Paschim Aawaj while giving an interview to reporter Yubaraj Neupane.

Talking to Freedom Forum Media Monitoring Desk, Station Manager at Radio Paschim Aawaj Yubaraj Neupane shared that cadre Saud was speaking about the general strike enforced by his party across the country on the same day.

Manager Neupane further informed that five police officials suddenly entered the studio and arrested cadre Saud for his alleged involvement in the political party.

Security officers' direct interference into the media house and its activity are against the democratic practice and a blatant violation of press freedom stressed Neupane.

It demonstrates the autocratic behavior of the state to media which in a way poses threat to journalists and mass media from the agency which is responsible for protecting free expression, FF's Chief Executive Taranath Dahal said.
