JUNE 13, 2011 Freedom Forum has been mournful at the murder of veteran investigative journalist of India Jyotirmoy Dey (56) on June 11, 2011.
Dey, who worked as a crime/investigation reporter to the Mid-Day newspaper published from Mumbai, India, was shot dead by four unidentified persons in suburban Powai on June 10. He had extensively covered crime and underworld over two decades.
Dey is survived by his wife Shubha Sharma and mother.
'The murder of journalist Dey has obviously sent a shock wave to Nepali media as India is the close neighbour of Nepal', said Freedom Forum Chairperson Taranath Dahal, adding the killing of veteran journalist shows that the journalists in India too are working in a very risky condition.
The broad day killing of journalist Dey not only ridicules the security situation but also denotes suppression of the free press/media and Indian people's right to information.
Freedom Forum, as an organization working for the cause of press freedom, democracy, right to information and human rights in Nepal for six years, expresses grave concern and condemns the killing of senior journalist Dey. The organization urges the Indian government and the concerned authorities there to investigate into the murder, arrest the culprits and bring the culprits to book so as to help to put an end to impunity and protect and promote people's fundamental rights- the right to information.
