CIAA CHIEF SPEAKS FOUL ON JOURNALISTS

JANUARY 13, 2014 Chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Lok Man Singh Karki, has spoken foul on journalists at a press meet in Biratnagar, a city in the southern plain of Nepal, on January 12, 2014.

CIAA Chief Karki misbehaved with 15 journalists when he was asked about the illegal supply of the betel nuts.

Speaking with Freedom Forum's Media Monitor Desk, reporter with the Annapurna Post daily from Biratnagar, Khilanath Dhakal, said,"At a press meet here, journalists put questions with CIAA Chief Karki about the illegal import and export of betel nuts after he was appointed as the Chief. He flatly rejected answering journalists and challenged them if there was his involvement."

When sought clear answer, he further said, "The social evils and malpractices were caused because of the journalists like you," according to reporter Dhakal. He also spoke foul on journalists.

Despite being a high level official, Mr Karki's remarks have demeaned and disheartened journalists.  It has affected the morale of the working journalists. Such incidents are deterrent factor to professional media.

Therefore, Freedom Forum urges the CIAA Chief to respect journalists and help create favourable atmosphere for free reporting.
