Ruling party lawmaker threatens journalist for writing news

Journalist Ramhari Karki was threatened by Nepal Communist Party's provincial lawmaker Rajkaji Maharjan for writing news on June 21. Lawmaker Maharjan is also the  NCP secretary of Lalitpur district. Lalitpur lies in Province 3.

Journalist Karki is an editor of the news portal, dainikeenews.com.

In a telephonic conversation with FF, journalist Karki said, ''I was threatened and questioned about the news related to the appointment of seven teachers in the NCP Lalitpur Executive district committee."

Earlier, he had published news about the appointment of seven teachers in NCP's district committee which is against the Education Act 2028, to which the teachers are obliged. According to the Act's 9th amendment, if teachers or staffs became the member of the executive committee of the party, he/she should be sacked from the position, or he leave teaching.

FF condemns the incident as it is a sheer violation of press freedom. Journalist, threatened for writing news, is against the right to free reporting which is guaranteed by the constitution of Nepal. FF strongly urges the concerned authority to address the issue seriously and ensure a safe environment for reporting.
