Photojournalist injured in protest

Photojournalist at www.makalukhabar.com Saroj Basnet was injured while reporting a protest in Kathmandu on February 16. Kathmandu is the federal capital of Nepal.

Basnet was injured on head while taking pictures of the protestors throwing stones at the police persons.

The incident took place outside the Federal Parliament Building at New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. The protest along with a one-day strike was called on by the leaders and cadres of different political parties against the government's decision to table the Millennium Challenge Corporation compact at the parliament.

Freedom Forum is concerned about the incident. Journalists being the frontline human rights workers must not be victims of clashes. Both the protestors and security persons need to assure safety to the journalists while making protest or taming protest. Intimidation on journalists is the violation of press freedom.

Together, FF urges the journalists to make their presence more visible to the protestors, wearing Press Jacket and sporting Press ID cards.
