Death Threat to Journalist Bijay Chauhan

Amidst growing anti-press incidents across the country, Freedom Forum has witnessed another incident of press freedom violation that a journalist has been issued death threat over the news.

An unidentified person speaking only Hindi language issued death threat to Bijay Chauhan, publisher of the Ankush daily published from Birgunj, a city in the eastern part of southern plain of Nepal on June 11, 2011.

The person threatened publisher Chauhan over the phone 9814227669 regarding the news the daily published recently about the involvement of Pavan Mittal from Birgunj in the transaction of fake Indian currency note.

Mittal was arrested by the police and investigation initiated.

Freedom Forum shows grave concern to the death threat issued to the journalist. The Freedom Forum urges the government and the concerned authorities to be serious towards the security to the journalists who are the torch bearers of people's right to information and democracy. It is the responsibility of the State to create the atmosphere conducive for the journalists to carry out their works.
