Journalists Manhandled in Morang

Freedom Forum’s attention has been drawn toward an incident of press freedom violation occurred in Biratnagar, a city in the southern plain of east Nepal on August 30, 2011.

Administration of Nobel Medical College and Hospital in Biratnagar including a doctor manhandled Biratnagar-based television reporters in course of making news about vandalism ensued after a death of a patient in the Hospital. The irate relatives of a patient dead after a botched operation had vandalized the Hospital.

Talking to media monitoring desk of the Freedom Forum, reporter to Tarai television, Kaushal Niraula said the hospital administration including Dr Prakash Sitaula involved in an abortive operation manhandled Pratik Shrestha of Avenues television and Abijal Bista of Sagarmatha television accusing them of visualizing the vandalism and seeking more information about botched operation in the Hospital.  The journalists had reached there to inquire more about the incident with the hospital administration, he added.

Freedom Forum, therefore, urges the concerned people and the institute to honour the journalists’ rights by providing real information about the failed operation so as to protect people’s right to information.
