Journalist Manhandled in Jhapa

Yet again, a journalist was manhandled in Jhapa, a district in the southern belt of the eastern most part of the country on September 7, 2011, over the news he wrote.

Journalist Rajendra Gautam affiliated to the Pratidin daily published from the district was manhandled at Bhadrapur Road over the news 'Rape Attempt on Girl Child' he published in the daily the previous day.

According to District Chairman of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Ganesh Pokhrel, journalist Gautam was manhandled allegedly by a son of the person involved in the rape attempt.  A local of Dangibari, Jhapa, Devi Upreti made the rape attempt as per the news.

Freedom Forum condemns the manhandle on the journalist. Freedom Forum therefore urges the concerned body to maintain security to the journalists so that they could write in a free and fair atmosphere, which promotes media freedom and right to information. Also the public need to be aware about journalists' rights and media freedom.
