Further Detention to Vandals at Newspaper Office

District Administration Office, Kathmandu, on September 12, issued an order to keep Raj Kumar Sigdel and Rajan Shrestha in detention for further ten days for investigation citing their involvement in the vandalism at the office of the Naya Patrika national daily on September 4, 2011.

Earlier, Chief District Officer (CDO) Laxmi Prasad Dhakal had issued order to keep them in detention for six days.

Sigdel and Shrestha are the two among nine involved in the vandalism. They were held by the police the same day they vandalized the newspaper office. However, others are still at large.

Come on five motorcycles, they had vandalized the office over the crime news the daily published under the title-'Three held with Sword'.

Freedom Forum welcomes the order issued by CDO Dhakal as it is an initiative to check rising impunity in the country. The organization further urges the concerned authorities to expedite the action to apprehend others involved in the vandalism which has victimized the media thereby hindering people's right to information.
