Death Threat to Journalist in pyuthan

Freedom Forum has been concerned over an incident of press freedom violation occurred in Pyuthan, a hilly district in the Midwestern region of Nepal on October 24, 2011.

Editor of a local weekly 'Hamro Ekta', Sushil Pokhrel, was threatened of taking life over the news about unsystematic town planning in the district which he published in the weekly a week ago.

Talking to the Media Monitoring Desk of the Freedom Forum, editor Pokhrel said, "Land broker Balaju Shrestha and a trader Resham KC took him under control for a while and issued death threat reasoning his news would ruin their business."

The media persons are attacked, and issued death threats from various sectors. Though the government has said it was committed to press freedom and journalists' rights, the journalists have not felt security and a free atmosphere to write about the malpractices in society.

Therefore, Freedom Forum urges the concerned authorities to keep vigil over the possible attack on journalist Pokhrel and help promote people's right to information.
