RSS Reporter Shahi Attacked

Freedom Forum has been concerned over an incident of press freedom violation occurred in Bajura, district in the far western region of Nepal on March 29, 2012.

Nimendra Sahi, district reporter with the National News Agency (RSS) Nepal, was beaten by locals at Bandhu VDC in the district while he was returning home after reporting.

Quoting reporter Shahi, the RSS, said the persons- Tekendra Karki, Basanta Adhikari and two others attacked him saying, "Why are you boasting with camera in the name of being journalist?"
Due to the attack, Shahi received injuries on eyes and forehead. Moreover, his purse and mobile set were also looted by the assailants.

He has been undergoing treatment at a local health centre in the district the RSS added.
Meanwhile, the police have taken under control two persons involved in attack and searching others too.

It shows journalists in Nepal have been attacked by the people of different walk of life ignoring who the journalists are and what their rights is. Such incidents are responsible for panicking journalists and imposing self-censorship on them.

Freedom Forum takes the prompt action of the police administration positively and urges for strong action against the assailants. Also, Freedom Forum wishes speedy recovery of journalist's health.
