Demonstrators manhandle journalists, vandalize vehicle

Freedom Forum has been concerned over vandalism on a vehicle used by journalist and manhandle on him in the capital city, Kathmandu, on May 10, 2012.

Rajesh Khanal, journalist associated with the Kathmandu Post daily, was manhandled and his motorcycle vandalized by the supporters of nationwide Nepal banda (general shutdown) while coming to office at Nalinchowk, Kathmandu.

Similarly, journalist Tapendra Karki with the Rajdhani daily and two others- Gobinda Chaulagain and Purna Bhakta Duwal with the Society of Cooperatives Journalists were manhandled by the demonstrators in Bhaktapur, adjoining district to the capital, in course of reporting on the banda.

With the nationwide banda, journalists have been facing hard times. The concerned administrations need to provide security to the journalists to carry out their works in a fear free atmosphere.
