Journalist arrested, case filed

Yet again, it has been found with the monitoring that journalist in Rupandehi district, Prakash Dumre, was arrested on November 21 from Butwal while reporting news from the election campaign conducted by left alliance.

After the arrest and subsequent detention for 23 days, a case was filed against him in the District Court Rupandehi. The Police have accused him of extortion and holding illegal arm and ammunition during the election period in the name of Biplav Maoist party.

Against the arrest of the journalist Dumre, writ of habeas corpus was filed by Federation of Nepali Journalists stating that the arrest was against the legal notion of press freedom.

So far, it was learnt that Dumre was arrested without following the rightful legal procedures, as no arrest warrant was issued to him before the arrest.

Supreme Court has already asked the show cause of the arrest to the respective police station and administration office. However, they have not shown any concern towards the decision of the court itself.

On FF's contact to District Police Office, Rupandehi where a Police Inspector avoided conveying information regarding the reason of arrest and detention of the journalist.

FF is also closely monitoring the case.
