Nepali media faced unprecedented attack after the Royal Coup of 2005. The hard earned press freedom guaranteed by the constitution of 1990 was endangered. Entire media fraternity, FoE activists, right defenders and civil society were alarmed over the terror spread by Royal move. It was both the opportunity and challenge that the concept of protecting press freedom in an institutionalized manner was begun, resulting in launching of this website www.nepalpressfreedom.org.

As a university teacher of Journalism and Mass communications. I frequently recommend my students to visit this website so that they could understand Nepali media landscape, press freedom and FoE issues thoroughly. The reports Freedom Forum produces are often presented as references on FoE and press freedom.

In view of the hostile atmosphere for the exercise of civil and political rights specially after 2005/2006, the emergence of Freedom Forum and its FoE violation monitoring outlet- www.nepalpressfreedom.org bears significant importance in Nepal. The relentless watch over government policies and laws, monitoring of press freedom violation and advocacy to end impunity for crime against journalists must be continued in Nepal. It is the very need this website has addressed.
